Hyderabad: An 18-year-old nursing student was allegedly strangled to death at her house in a village in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, with police launching a manhunt for a youth accused of persistently pressuring her to marry him after she repeatedly turned down his advances.The victim, I Harini (18), a native of Vangannapalem village, was a first year BSc (nursing) student at a private college in Khammam district. A few days ago, Harini returned to her native village. At around 3 pm on Tuesday, she was alone at home after her mother, Rajeshwari, went to a nearby house to help prepare pickles.“At around 4.30 pm, I called Harini. Someone received the call but did not speak. I sent a girl from the neighbourhood to check and she returned saying the door was locked. At 5 pm, I went home and found my daughter lying unconscious behind the bathroom. Blood was oozing from her mouth and there was an injury mark on her neck,” Rajeshwari said in her police complaint.Alerted by locals, Julurpad police rushed to the village and shifted the body for postmortem examination. In her complaint, Rajeshwari alleged that a 20-year-old man from the same village, D Pavan Kumar, could be behind the murder.“Pavan used to harass my daughter to marry him, but she did not want to marry him. I suspect that Pavan might have murdered Harini because of her refusal to marry him,” Rajeshwari alleged.Following the postmortem on Wednesday, doctors informed police that there were no signs of sexual assault and that Harini had died due to strangulation.“We were told that Harini was strangled to death. The section of the case will be altered from section 194 of BNSS (suspicious death) to 103 (1) (murder). The main suspect, Pavan, is absconding. Our teams are trying to locate him,” Kothagudem DSP L Adi Narayana said.
