Hyderabad: A remand prisoner in a Pocso case, who escaped from the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda on Tuesday morning while being taken there for a medical check-up, died by suicide at his native place in Wanaparthy district on Wednesday.The accused, Kishore Kumar Reddy (22), a tractor driver, was arrested by Amarchinta police about four months ago in a Pocso case for eloping with a minor girl.Initially lodged in Mahbubnagar district prison, Reddy scaled the boundary wall and escaped about three months ago. “He was caught the same day, on July 6, after he consumed pesticide in the agricultural fields of the girl. After receiving medical treatment, the jail authorities transferred him to Chanchalguda prison,” Atmakur CI T Shiva Kumar said.Unable to apply for bail due to his poor financial condition, Reddy reportedly began behaving erratically, picking fights with and assaulting fellow inmates.At around 10.30 am on Tuesday, Chanchalguda prison officials referred him to the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda for a check-up. Two Armed Reserve constables escorted him to the hospital. Reddy escaped through the ventilator of a hospital toilet, Borabanda inspector B Ravi Kumar said.Based on a complaint by the constables, Borabanda police registered a case under Section 262 of the BNS for resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension.On Wednesday, Amarchinta police went to Reddy’s village to make enquiries about his whereabouts. “Reddy reached the village and realised that police were present. He ended his life in the agricultural fields of the girl. Alerted by locals, our constables reached the spot and shifted Reddy to the govt hospital in Atmakur, where he was declared dead,” the Atmakur CI said.The Wanaparthy RDO conducted an inquest. Amarchinta police registered a case under Section 194 of the BNSS. After the postmortem, the body was handed over to Reddy’s family on Wednesday.
