15th-century inscription found near ruined Shiva temple in Nallamala | Hyderabad News
Hyderabad: A stone inscription recording a gift made in 1404 by Tripuraraju, son of Mahamandalesvara Mallidevaraju, has been discovered near a ruined Shiva temple in the Nallamala forest at Udimella village of Nagarkurnool district.The 20-line inscription identifies Tripuraraju as the son of Mallidevaraju and traces the family’s lineage to Madhavavarma. Mallidevaraju is described as the lord of Maninagapura, belonging to the Hariti gotra and possessing thousands of elephants and cavalry.The inscription gives the Saka year as 1990, which researchers said is incorrect. However, the other calendrical details — the Tarana year, Paushya Suddha Dasami, Friday and Uttarayana Sankramana — correspond to Dec 14, 1404.The record states that Tripuraraju made a datti, or gift, to Udumisvara Deva of Udumidla for incense, lamps and naivedya, or food offerings. It also mentions Visalakshi Jiyyelu Deva. The inscription ends with a customary warning against taking away property donated either by oneself or by others.Karthik Pothuboyina of Vijayawada noticed the inscription slab and brought it to the attention of researchers. He is a member of the Vedadri Nallagorla trekking team, which explores sacred sites, inscriptions and historical remains in the Nallamala region. Nallagorla Vedadri, M Srinivas, Surender Reddy and Vishnu also took part in the field exploration.Link to Amanagallu inscriptionSriramojju Haragopal, president of the Kotta Telangana Charitra Brindam, edited and deciphered the inscription. He linked it to another inscription found on Ramalingeswara Swamy hill at Amanagallu of Nalgonda district.Published as Inscription No. 54 in Kotta Telangana Sasanalu, the Amanagallu record contains a matching eulogy and dates to the reign of Mallidevaraju. It identifies him as the ruler of Kondapalli, or Nelakondapalli. The Udimella inscription, however, was commissioned by his son Tripuraraju.Researchers noted that the title “Maninagapuravareshvara” was first used for Medaraju, the ruler of Polasa. Mallidevaraju and Tripuraraju also belonged to the lineage of Madhavavarma.
