Quarry plea disposed, HC asks petitioner to approach appellate forum

Hyderabad: Telangana high court has disposed of a writ petition challenging proposed quarrying, stone-crushing and blasting activities in two survey numbers at Akuthotapally village in Amangal mandal of Rangareddy district on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The petition questioned the consent orders issued by the Telangana Pollution Control Board under the Water and Air Acts. Appearing for the petitioner, P Sree Ramya contended that several issues required consideration, including environmental clearance, classification of the mining project, the status of the land, the agencies involved, the lack of a proper environmental assessment and the absence of public consultation. The petitioner also raised concerns over the potential impact of blasting, dust pollution and heavy vehicle movement on villagers, agricultural lands, groundwater sources, houses, and a nearby government primary school attended by about 120 children.Seeking interim relief, the petitioner requested the court to stay the proposed activity. However, the assistant govt pleader informed the court that no work had commenced at the site.Recording the submission, the high court disposed of the petition while granting liberty to the petitioner to approach the appropriate appellate forum. The court also observed that contempt proceedings could be initiated if any work was undertaken contrary to the statement made before it.
