HC suspends AI-based land order issued by Jangaon collector

Hyderabad: Telangana high court has expressed anger over the Jangaon district collector using artificial intelligence (AI) to pass orders in revenue-related matters, saying such negligence could seriously affect the rights of ordinary people, farmers and landowners.Justice NV Shravan Kumar made the observations on Tuesday while hearing a petition filed by Madipelly Komuraiah of Peddamadur village in Devaruppula mandal of Jangaon district. The petitioner challenged the orders issued by the collector on Sept 8 in a land dispute concerning him.The court questioned how a collector could act in such a manner in matters involving land disputes and revenue issues, where the consequences of official orders could be severe. It observed that orders passed by a collector in such cases directly affect people’s land rights and livelihoods.Arguing for the petitioner, advocate M Madhava Reddy submitted that the collector had issued one-sided orders by using AI, without properly examining the facts, records and details of the case. He said the petitioner’s case was not considered fairly and sought relief from the court by seeking suspension of the collector’s order. After hearing the submissions, the court issued interim orders suspending the Sept 8 order passed by the collector. The court also issued notices to the principal secretary, revenue department, the Jangaon collector, the Devaruppula tahsildar and others, directing them to file their explanations.Appearing for the revenue department, assistant govt pleader Haritha told the court that the issue of the collector using AI to issue orders had come to the notice of the govt pleader for revenue, who had written to the advocate general’s office seeking advice on the future course of action.Taking serious note of the matter, high court directed advocate general A Sudarshan Reddy to explain what action had been taken on the issue and adjourned the matter to Nov 18 for further hearing.
