Hyderabad: Telangana remained at the top among states in retail inflation in August, with consumer price inflation at 6.27% against the national average of 4.82%. More significantly, Telangana has recorded higher inflation than the national average every month since January, with the gap averaging about two percentage points during the first eight months of 2026.The gap was widest in March, when Telangana’s inflation stood at 5.83% compared with 3.40% nationally, a difference of 2.43 percentage points. It stood at 2.33 points in April, 2.22 points in May and 2.10 points in June. In July, Telangana recorded 6.32% inflation against 4.00% nationally, leaving a gap of 2.32 points. The gap narrowed to 1.45 points in August, but Telangana’s inflation remained substantially higher.A higher inflation rate means households in Telangana experienced a faster rise in the prices of goods and services covered by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) than households nationally. It does not mean every item became 1.45% more expensive. Rather, the overall price rise measured through the CPI was 1.45 percentage points higher in Telangana in August. For households, sustained higher inflation can mean greater pressure on monthly spending, particularly when price increases are concentrated in essential items.The pressure was more pronounced in rural areas. Telangana’s rural inflation stood at 6.70% in August, compared with 5.88% in urban areas, a gap of 0.82 percentage points. This means rural households faced a faster overall rise in prices than urban households during the month.The rural-urban difference has been a consistent feature of Telangana’s inflation trend this year. Rural inflation remained higher than urban inflation every month from January to August. It touched 6.94% in June and remained at 6.86% in July before easing to 6.70% in August.Among states, Telangana recorded the highest inflation in August at 6.27%, followed by Tamil Nadu at 5.92% and Madhya Pradesh at 5.55%. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha followed closely at 5.53% and 5.52%, respectively.Telangana’s combined inflation has remained above 6% since May, despite easing marginally from its June peak of 6.36%. The trend points to persistent price pressures in the state rather than a one-month spike.
