AIMIM MLC Rahmat Baig yet to resign

Hyderabad: Despite AIMIM leadership’s diktat to resign from his council membership two weeks ago, MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct, has not yet resigned. When the announcement was made by MIM expelling him from the party for the alleged sexual misconduct with a minor girl and sought his resignation as MLC, he was on Umrah and returned to Hyderabad a few days ago.The party anticipated he would put in his papers once he returns to the city. However, he has not met the council chairperson yet and has not attended the ongoing council sessions for the past few days. AIMIM sources said the party is closely watching his movements and would take a decision in a couple of days.Meanwhile, official sources said that since Rahmat Baig was elected from Hyderabad Local Authority, the elections cannot be held even if he resigns. In Hyderabad local authority constituency, municipal corporators are voters. Since Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) term ended in Feb this year, there is no elected body in GHMC. The election would happen only after GHMC elections are over, if he resigns and a vacancy is notified by Election Commission (EC).Meanwhile, Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha too resigned as MLC almost nine months ago. She was elected from Nizamabad Local Authority constituency, where MPTCs, ZPTCs and municipal councillors are voters of the constituency. The elections could not be held as the state govt has not conducted ZP elections, MPTC and ZPTCs, but municipal elections were held a few months ago. “As per EC norms, there should be 75% of total voters. Since the ZP elections were not held, Nizamabad local authority vacancies cannot be filled by EC,” a council official said.Along with these two, three MLCs — Goreti Venkanna, Buggarapu Dayanand and Basvaraju Sariah, who were nominated by the governor — would complete their term in Nov. Many leaders in Congress are trying for the MLC posts under the governor quota. Along with them, two MLCs under Graduate constituencies, Surabhi Vani Devi from Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahabubnagar and Chintapandu Naveen Kumar, popularly known as Teenmar Mallanna, from Warangal-Nalgonda-Khammam Graduate constituencies would complete their term in March 2027.
