Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Nampally on Monday after Telangana Youth Congress activists staged a protest outside the BJP state headquarters, blackened a gate of the office and burnt an effigy of Union home minister Amit Shah, prompting police intervention and triggering a political war of words between the Congress and BJP.The protesters, led by Telangana Youth Congress president Jakkidi Shiva Charan Reddy, said the agitation was against the alleged use of pellet guns on students during recent protests in Delhi and the alleged insult to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. They demanded Amit Shah’s resignation and raised slogans against the BJP-led Centre. During the protest, some activists splashed black paint on a gate of the BJP office, while others burnt an effigy outside the premises.Police moved in and detained several protesters as they attempted to intensify the agitation near the party office.The incident drew a sharp reaction from Union minister of state for home affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who questioned the role of the police and intelligence machinery. Speaking to senior police officials on the phone, Sanjay sought an explanation on how protesters were able to burn an effigy and apply black paint to the BJP office gate. He asked whether the intelligence network had failed and demanded immediate action against those responsible.BJYM activists attempted to march towards Gandhi Bhavan in response to the Youth Congress demonstration. Police detained several BJYM leaders and stepped up security around Gandhi Bhavan and the BJP office to prevent any escalation.
