Hyderabad: A late-night gathering in agricultural fields near Moinabad ended in tragedy when two engineering students were electrocuted after reportedly coming in contact with an illegal live wire fence set up to protect a paddy crop from wild boars. The tragedy took place when the students spotted a police patrolling vehicle and tried to flee by running across fields. The students were among a group of friends who had gathered in the area after a birthday celebration. The deceased were Mokshay Charan (20) of Upparapally and D Yashwant (20) of Balkampet, both third year students of a private engineering college under the limits of Moinabad police station.According to police, a patrol team on routine night duty along the Moinabad-Peddamangalaram road around 2 am noticed several two-wheelers parked by the roadside and a group of youngsters sitting in adjacent fields. On noticing the police vehicle, some of the students allegedly panicked and attempted to leave the spot. While a few rode away on their two-wheelers, Charan and Yashwant reportedly ran into a nearby paddy field. They reportedly came in contact with the electric wire laid around the field and died on the spot.Moinabad sub-inspector K Ramakrishna said the wire had been installed by tenant farmer Raji Reddy of Peddamangalaram to prevent wild boars from damaging the crop. The other students immediately alerted the nearby police patrol team, which rushed to the spot.Police registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the farmer. Preliminary investigation revealed that the wire had been laid around nearly half an acre of paddy field and connected to a power source to ward off wild animals. The accused is yet to be arrested.Investigators also found that the two students had attended a friend’s birthday celebration at Rajendranagar earlier in the night. They, along with eight other students, allegedly purchased liquor near Bandlaguda and later went to the agricultural fields at Peddamangalaram in the early hours of Saturday.
