Armoury heist: Country-made pistol recovered from ex-havildar

Hyderabad: After 10 days of custodial interrogation of ex-havildar U Mallesh, who was arrested by Malkajgiri police for his alleged role in the Madras Regiment armoury heist, police are learnt to have recovered a country-made pistol from him.As reported by TOI earlier, police are probing the role of a few more suspects. Malkajgiri police are expected to show the arrest of more accused either on Friday or Saturday. Police are in the process of finalising which of the suspects will be shown as arrested.During custodial interrogation, Mallesh was questioned by confronting him with statements given by other suspects. Officials suspect that at least two of the suspects currently in police custody were part of the conspiracy and assisted in the commission of the offence.Why the prime accused allegedly possessed a country-made pistol is yet to be ascertained, and officials have remained tight-lipped about the details.On the night of Aug 30, Mallesh allegedly entered the Madras Regiment premises and committed a burglary in the armoury. Police had earlier claimed that he committed the offence alone and later fled with the stolen weapons. Using a bike, he allegedly moved the weapons, including assault rifles, out of the cantonment. He subsequently used his car to transport the weapons to Nagarkurnool, his native district, where he hid them.Following a sustained investigation, police arrested Mallesh and recovered the stolen weapons.
