CMC plans to turn green waste into industrial fuel

Hyderabad: What is currently hauled away as green waste could soon be turned into industrial fuel in Cyberabad, with the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) planning to convert tree-pruning and horticulture waste into bio-briquettes.CMC has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to establish, operate and maintain a green waste-to-bio-briquette plant under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The proposed facility will process at least five tonnes of green waste a day, with scope to increase capacity based on waste availability. The plant will process tree-pruning waste, horticulture waste, avenue plantation residues and other biodegradable green waste into bio-briquettes for use as industrial fuel.According to CMC, the project is aimed at scientifically utilising municipal green waste, reducing open burning and landfill disposal, and generating revenue through the sale of bio-briquettes. The project could also potentially generate carbon credits.“The idea effectively gives a second life to waste generated during routine maintenance of the city’s green spaces, turning branches, pruning residues and other green material into a commercially usable product. Under the proposed PPP arrangement, we will facilitate land, electricity and supply of municipal green waste, besides providing administrative and statutory support,” said a CMC official. The private partner will be responsible for investing in plant and machinery, deploying manpower, operating and maintaining the facility, and marketing and selling the bio-briquettes. CMC is seeking agencies with experience in biomass, waste management, renewable energy or briquette and pellet plants.
