A few weeks ago, Reese Witherspoon made headlines after she acquired 100% of the shares of her company, Hello Sunshine, after selling it in 2021 for USD 900 million. Now, according to recent reports, the company is downsizing on a major scale after Witherspoon came back on board as the owner of the firm.

Reese Witherspoon’s company faces major downsizing

According to reports shared online by Variety, Witherspoon is downsizing her company by almost 50%. The report revealed that the actress has fired around 30 employees from her company, which amounts to half of the company’s overall workforce, and that the media firm will now exclusively focus on film and television projects along with the Reese’s Book Club brand, among other things. While the company was operating under Candel Media, it had already faced four separate stages of layoffs in the past two years alone. Witherspoon’s company’s kids and animation unit were also shut down in 2023.The company had been sold off at the peak of the streaming services boom; however, after priorities shifted and the market changed, the company that had bought Witherspoon’s banner started facing losses. This year, after partnering with another media conglomerate, Mediawan, the ‘Legally Blonde’ actress repurchased the company for only a fraction of the amount that was paid to buy it. Reportedly, they paid a low- to mid-eight-figure sum (which has been estimated at around USD 50 million, which means that there was a roughly 94% drop from its selling amount).Earlier, Witherspoon had issued an official statement after the news of the fresh acquisition was made public. Her statement read, “Joining Pierre-Antoine Capton and his teams because this is the perfect home for this new media landscape. It’s also a homecoming. Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs believed in Hello Sunshine from day one. I’m deeply proud of what our incredible team has built and grateful to Blackstone and Candle Media for their partnership and unwavering support.”Reese started the media company back in 2016.DISCLAIMER: Figures presented in this article are derived from various public sources and are considered approximate unless explicitly noted.
