Hyderabad’s water worries mount as reservoir levels plummet | Hyderabad News

Water storage across the five key reservoirs supplying Hyderabad has plunged by three times in a year, raising concerns over the city’s water security, with inflows remaining negligible.According to the data from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the combined storage in Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, Singur, Manjeera and Akkampally reservoirs stood at 8.9 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) on Oct 24, 2026, compared with 25.904 TMC on the same date last year — a loss of 16.952 TMC.Water level decline severe in SingurThe decline has been particularly severe in Singur, one of the major reservoirs supplying Hyderabad. Its storage has plummeted from 16.620 TMC in Oct 2025 to 3.140 TMC in Oct 2026, a drop of about 81%. Meanwhile, the combined storage in Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar has fallen from 6.566 TMC to 4.273 TMC.Manjeera has recorded an even steeper decline, with its storage dropping by more than 84% to just 0.220 TMC.‘Reduce water consumption by 20%’The declining trend extends to the larger reservoirs as well. Nagarjuna Sagar’s storage has fallen from 305.560 TMC a year ago to 183.770 TMC, while Srisailam’s storage has dropped sharply from 191.650 TMC to 57.280 TMC. Sri Pada Yellampally has also recorded a decline, with storage decreasing from 20.175 TMC to 17.814 TMC.Amid the worsening situation, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has stressed the need for water conservation and urged citizens to reduce consumption by 20% and use water judiciously.
