Hyderabad: After days of scant rainfall, Telangana is bracing for heavy to extremely heavy rain on Oct 28. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for three districts — Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam — as a system over the Bay of Bengal is forecast to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast.Nights in Hyderabad are also expected to turn cooler over the next few days, with the city’s minimum temperature forecast to fall to around 19°C on Oct 27 and 28.The IMD’s seven-day forecast, issued on Sunday, said isolated places in the three red-alert districts could receive extremely heavy rainfall on Oct 28. An orange alert was issued for Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda and Suryapet, where heavy to very heavy rain was likely at isolated places. The depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal was expected to intensify into a deep depression, then a cyclonic storm by Oct 26 and a severe cyclonic storm around Oct 27. It was forecast to strengthen further and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of Oct 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm, with sustained wind speeds of 115-125 kmph and gusts of up to 140 kmph.On Oct 28, rainfall is expected to spread across Telangana, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely at many places. Isolated places could continue to receive heavy rain on Oct 29.Hyderabad, however, is expected to escape the worst of the weather. The city’s zone-wise forecast indicates light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, on Oct 28 and 29. The expected impact across Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation zones is rated very low.The forecast comes amid a sharp shortfall in rainfall. Telangana received 3.5 mm of rain against a normal of 75.6 mm between Oct 1 and 21, a deficit of 95%, according to IMD data.
