Hyderabad: The runway is yet to take shape, but the flight for what Warangal’s proposed airport should be called has already taken off on social media.Chief minister A Revanth Reddy’s appeal on X to people to suggest a name for the proposed Mamnoor airport has triggered a stream of suggestions from politicians, film personalities and ordinary netizens. The suggestions are varied: PV Narasimha Rao, Orugallu, Rudrama Devi, Kakatiya, Sammakka-Saralamma and Prataparudra.Of these, Kakatiya, Rani Rudrama Devi and Sammakka-Saralamma appear to be the front-runners, for now.Among those pushing for them was Warangal-born filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga – known for blockbusters ‘Arjun Reddy’, ‘Kabir Singh’ and ‘Animal’. He said it should either be Rudrama International Airport (RIA) or Kakatiya International Airport (KIA) to reflect Warangal and Kakatiya heritage.Joining him in the name game was ‘Dasara’ director, Srikanth Odela, who suggested Sammakka-Saralamma International Airport, even as producer-actor Bandla Ganesh picked Rani Rudrama Devi International Airport, Warangal, as his first choice.“Power places need powerful names of the people from that land. Rudrama Devi International Airport or Kakatiya International Airport remind us of the rich history of Orugallu,” posted leading Tollywood star Vijay Devarakonda on XMembers of the political class also joined in.“Warangal airport can be named after former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao,” said CPI national secretary, K Narayana.Former minister from Warangal, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, also backed the suggestion, pointing out that the airport had been used by PV during his visits.Netizens too jumped in with their suggestions, reiterating that the airport should reflect Warangal’s rich history.“Kakatiya International Airport has a ring of history to it. Imagine a pilot announcing, ‘We are now approaching the land of the Kakatiyas’. That thought alone gives me goosebumps,” posted Venkat VD.Another X user, Sagar KV, suggested names including Hajare Mangamma Airport and Chakali Ilamma Airport, arguing that Warangal’s history of resistance and social movements should find representation in the airport’s name.
