Hyderabad: Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has invited Karnataka Genco to partner with Telangana in a joint venture for captive coal mining operations.As part of his visit to Bengaluru, the deputy CM met Karnataka energy minister KJ George on Thursday. The two leaders discussed issues related to the energy sector in both states, including coal supplies, payments for coal purchases and the exchange of technology.Bhatti proposed that Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) and Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) work together through a joint venture (JV) to ensure adequate coal availability in line with the growing demand for electricity. In view of Karnataka’s increasing power requirements, he suggested that KPCL and Singareni jointly undertake mining operations in captive coal blocks allotted to KPCL in Chhattisgarh and Odisha. He noted that Singareni, with nearly 137 years of experience in coal mining, could efficiently undertake operations in the coal blocks secured by KPCL.He added that Singareni could benefit from Karnataka’s extensive experience in the power sector, particularly in operating the power plants the company proposes to set up. He suggested that the feasibility of establishing a joint venture between Singareni and KPCL should be studied to promote cooperation, growth, and expansion.Meanwhile, minister George said Karnataka’s rapid industrial growth had led to a substantial increase in electricity demand. He requested Telangana to ensure a continuous supply of coal for the operation of thermal power projects in the state.Singareni is currently supplying 5.2 million tonnes of coal annually under full linkage to the Yermarus thermal power station in Karnataka. Under partial linkage, it supplies 3 million tonnes to the Raichur thermal power station and 2.2 million tonnes to the Bellary thermal power station unit 3.Bhatti said coal is being supplied to Karnataka through at least four rakes every day.
