The wait for ‘Sardar 2’ is nearing its end, with Karthi returning to the spy thriller world on September 10, 2026. Director PS Mithran has now opened up about the making of the sequel and the scale of the story. According to the filmmaker, the film goes beyond the usual action and espionage elements by exploring the emotional and psychological struggles of a spy.
PS Mithran says ‘Sardar 2’ explores the psychological side of espionage
Speaking about the sequel with Cinema Vikaran, PS Mithran explained that ‘Sardar 2’ takes the world created in the first film to a deeper level. He said, “‘Sardar’ and ‘Sardar 2’ belong to the same world. We have raised the quality and added more depth. This time, we have explored the psychological problems faced by a spy. It is not just about whether a spy wins or loses a mission. The film focuses on the psychological and emotional journey that decides how the mission ends.” He further described the movie as a proper action spy thriller with no compromises. The director added, “Espionage is usually understood as something that happens between countries. But here, it starts from a very simple place and expands to the international level. It is also about shadowy people who move without anyone knowing.”
‘Sardar 2’ director praises Karthi’s dedication to dual roles
Mithran also highlighted Karthi’s commitment to the sequel, especially since the actor plays both the younger and older versions of his character. “A major part of the journey involves both versions of Karthi moving together through the story. Without the hero’s intense involvement, it would have been very difficult to complete this film. He had to completely immerse himself in the project and work with passion and determination. That’s exactly what Karthi did,” the filmmaker said. He also revealed that the idea for the sequel came only after the first film was completed. While shooting Sardar, he had not initially planned a second part, but Karthi’s character made him feel there was more drama left to explore.
Karthi and SJ Suryah face off in ‘Sardar 2’
Another major attraction of ‘Sardar 2’ is the first-time combination of Karthi and SJ Suryah. Mithran revealed that he wrote the villain first and immediately felt that SJ Suryah was the right choice for the role. “The story and character impressed him so much that he agreed to do it immediately. He has brought his own style to the role,” the director said.Rajisha Vijayan, Malavika Mohanan, and Ashika Ranganath also have important parts in the film. With Sam CS composing the music for his 100th film and the sequel expanding the spy universe into a bigger international setting, ‘Sardar 2’ is gearing up as a more intense continuation of Karthi’s spy saga.
