Tamara Lich, one of the best-known leaders of Canada’s 2022 Freedom Convoy protests, has been barred from leaving the country after an Ontario judge rejected her request to travel internationally while serving her sentence.Lich had asked the court for permission to leave Canada for work-related reasons. The request was rejected on Wednesday, meaning she must continue to comply with the travel restrictions imposed as part of her conditional sentence.Lich became a prominent figure in Canada in early 2022 when she helped organise the so-called Freedom Convoy, a protest against Covid-19 vaccine mandates and pandemic restrictions. Truckers and other demonstrators travelled to Ottawa and occupied streets around Parliament Hill for several weeks, causing major disruption in the Canadian capital.The protests began over a vaccine mandate affecting truckers crossing the Canada-US border but grew into a broader movement against the government’s Covid-19 policies and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.The federal government invoked the Emergencies Act in February 2022 to deal with the demonstrations. Police subsequently cleared the protest from downtown Ottawa.
Why was Tamara Lich convicted?
Lich and fellow convoy organiser Chris Barber were prosecuted over their roles in the Ottawa protest.In 2025, an Ontario judge found Lich guilty of mischief, while acquitting her of other allegations including intimidation and obstructing police.She was later sentenced to a 12-month conditional sentence, including house arrest and community service.Lich has maintained that the Freedom Convoy was a peaceful political protest and has appealed her conviction.
Why can’t she leave Canada?
Lich sought permission to travel internationally while serving her sentence, including for work. The court declined to modify the conditions.The judge noted that Lich had complied with her existing conditions but concluded that allowing her to travel abroad would undermine the punitive and deterrent purpose of the sentence.The ruling does not mean Lich has committed a new offence or violated her existing conditions. Rather, the court decided that there was insufficient reason to make an exception to the restrictions already imposed on her.Lich therefore remains subject to the conditions of her conditional sentence and cannot leave Canada under the current order.
