Two Indiana teen brothers, 15 and 14, jumped into a retention pond to save a grandmother and two young children; one pulled a submerged 2-year-old from a stroller and got the toddler breathing again

Two teenage brothers jumped into a murky pond in Carmel, Indiana, to rescue a grandmother, her four-year-old grandchild, and a toddler trapped underwater in a pushchair. Maddox Larger, 15, and his 14-year-old brother, Grant, jumped into the water on Monday, 12 October 2026, after seeing the family in danger. Their quick actions helped save a two-year-old boy who had stopped breathing underwater. One of the teenagers performed emergency back slaps on dry land to help the child breathe again. According to an official statement from the City of Carmel, local police and fire crews were called to the scene at around 11:15 a.m. after emergency calls reported children underwater.

A sudden struggle in deep water

The emergency began when the grandmother was walking near the pond with her two young grandchildren. The pushchair carrying the two-year-old slipped into the water and became partly submerged. As the grandmother tried to pull the pushchair out, she lost her footing and fell into the pond. She had the four-year-old child strapped to her back. Neither the grandmother nor the older child knew how to swim, leaving them struggling in the water with little chance of getting out on their own. When Maddox and Grant Larger saw what was happening nearby, they ran to the pond and jumped straight into the water to help. The brothers reached the grandmother first. They supported her and helped guide her and the four-year-old child safely back to the shore.

Performing life-saving first aid

Once the grandmother and four-year-old were safely on dry land, Maddox turned his attention to the pushchair still submerged in the pond. He pulled the heavy, water-soaked pushchair out of the water and quickly unbuckled the trapped two-year-old. The toddler was unresponsive and not breathing, so Maddox immediately began giving back slaps to help clear the child’s airway. His quick action worked. The treatment helped force water out of the toddler’s lungs. Soon, the child began breathing again and started to cry. By the time crews from the Carmel Fire Department and Carmel Police Department arrived, both children were safely out of the water. First responders checked the two-year-old and four-year-old at the scene. They confirmed that both children were conscious, crying, and in stable condition.

Praise from local authorities

Public safety officials in Carmel praised the teenagers for acting quickly and helping prevent a tragedy. “The immediate actions taken by Maddox and Grant demonstrated remarkable courage and quick thinking under pressure,” said Sgt. Matt Keinsley of the Carmel Police Department in an official media release. “Their heroic efforts made the difference between a tragedy and a miraculous outcome.” City officials also pointed out that the pond was dangerous because of its steep sides and murky water. These conditions made it difficult to see what was happening underwater and meant that quick action was vital.

Civic recognition planned at city council

The rescue has earned widespread praise across the suburban Indianapolis community. To recognise their bravery and quick response in a dangerous situation, city leaders confirmed that Maddox and Grant Larger will receive formal honours at an upcoming public ceremony. According to official event details published by the City of Carmel, the brothers will receive commendations for their life-saving actions during the Carmel City Council meeting scheduled for 16 November 2026.
