This prehistoric Czech sanctuary is 1,000 years older than Stonehenge; reveals how farmers tracked the movements of the Sun and the Moon 6,500 years ago

A prehistoric sanctuary discovered near Chleby in the Czech Republic is giving archaeologists a brand new view of how Europe’s early farming communities understood the Sun, Moon and changing seasons. The circular structure, built more than 6,500 years ago, is around 1,000 years older than Stonehenge and appears to have been designed for both rituals and observing movements in the sky. According to the University of West Bohemia (UWB), archaeologists have found that the enormous enclosure contained 12 entrances whose positions were carefully arranged rather than placed randomly. Their research suggests that people who lived in the region had a detailed understanding of important solar and lunar cycles. The discovery makes the Chleby sanctuary one of the oldest monuments of its kind in Central Europe and offers a rare glimpse into prehistoric beliefs and daily life.

What makes the 6,500-year-old Czech sanctuary so unique

The sanctuary stands near the present-day village of Chleby and dates back more than 6,500 years. As per the University of West Bohemia’s report, people constructed an almost circular enclosure measuring about 230 metres across. The structure was surrounded by a ditch more than 2.5 metres deep and contained 12 entrances. What initially appeared to be a prehistoric enclosure became even more significant when archaeologists examined the positioning of those entrances. Petr Krištuf from the Department of Archaeology at the University of West Bohemia, leads the research and explained that circular enclosures from this period are completely unknown in the region. The arrangement of the entrances therefore provided an important clue that the site had been deliberately designed. Instead of simply forming a large enclosed area, the structure appears to have been created around particular points on the horizon.

The positioning of the entrances appears to have allowed people at Chleby to observe important events in movements of the Sun and the Moon. The research team has identified two main observation points. One is connected with the Moon’s extreme positions on the horizon during its approximately 18-year cycle. The other links sunrise at the summer solstice with sunset at the winter solstice. According to the University of West Bohemia, this arrangement is similar to the better-known alignment at Stonehenge. The major difference is its age. Organic material recovered from Chleby indicates that the sanctuary was established more than 1,000 years before Stonehenge. For the farming communities who built it, these celestial events may have carried meanings beyond simply marking dates. Krištuf said that sunrise at the summer solstice could have represented a beginning, while sunset at the winter solstice represented an ending. The layout of the sanctuary suggests that these ideas may have been built directly into the landscape.

Ritualistic belief connected with the Chleby sanctuary

The evidence suggests that the sanctuary was not simply an early astronomical observation site. Archaeologists have also discovered remains that point towards ritual activities. Bull skulls and horns were found in the ditch close to the entrances. Archaeologists believe that these remains may once have decorated large gateways leading into the enclosure. Jan Turek, an archaeologist involved in the research on behalf of Charles University, noted that the bull was an important religious symbol among Europe’s first farming communities and was known from several parts of prehistoric Europe. The combination of carefully positioned entrances and animal remains therefore gives the site a more complex character. The sanctuary has connected observations of the natural world with ceremonies and beliefs. Human remains add another layer to the story. Earlier research identified a Bronze Age burial belonging to the Únětice culture. Around 18 people were buried there gradually over time.

Did the sanctuary remain important for thousands of years

According to the University of West Bohemia, current research suggests that its role eventually changed. By the Iron Age, the monument appears to have lost its original significance. The ditch was gradually filled in, and an ordinary settlement was established where the former sanctuary had stood. This development contrasts with the history of Stonehenge, which experienced repeated periods of renewed use and continued to acquire cultural associations long after its construction. At Chleby, the evidence points towards a gradual fading of the monument’s original importance. What had once been a significant ritual landscape eventually became part of everyday settlement.

Learnings from the prehistoric Czech site

The research at Chleby is now turning particular attention to the soil surrounding and within the enclosure. Jan Fišer of the University of Hradec Králové is analysing soil samples because human activity can leave chemical traces even when visible objects have disappeared. According to the university, these traces could help researchers understand how the site was used during different periods of prehistory. That could reveal details that artefacts alone cannot provide. It may help establish where particular activities took place and how the use of the sanctuary changed over time. The Chleby discovery ultimately shows that sophisticated prehistoric monuments were not limited to famous sites such as Stonehenge. More than 6,500 years ago, farming communities in what is now the Czech Republic were already creating large structures whose design appears to have connected the land, the seasons and the movements of celestial bodies.
