Revanth to chair special cabinet meet on drought, El Niño impact on Oct 12 | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: With Telangana grappling with a rainfall deficit and drought-like conditions across large parts of the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy will chair a special cabinet meeting on Oct 12 to review the impact of El Niño and finalise relief and mitigation measures for affected regions.The high-level meeting will focus on drought-hit mandals, the challenges faced by farmers and the govt’s response in sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, drinking water supply and power.According to the chief minister’s office (CMO), Telangana has received 17% below-normal rainfall due to the impact of El Niño, with drought conditions reported in 235 mandals.The meeting is expected to examine the support measures proposed for drought-affected areas, including recommendations made by the cabinet sub-committee, inputs received during the all-party meeting, and suggestions from farmers’ organisations and experts from various fields.The state govt has already declared several mandals drought-affected and passed a resolution in the assembly seeking financial assistance from the Centre. It has requested a special package of ₹20,000 crore to deal with the situation.The issue was discussed extensively at the recent cabinet meeting, following which the chief minister directed officials to hold consultations with political parties, farmers’ bodies and subject experts on the impact of El Niño and the measures required to tackle the emerging crisis.The cabinet also urged the Centre to declare the affected mandals as drought-hit and extend financial assistance to the state. It further decided to send a delegation of ministers to meet Union ministers and present Telangana’s case for additional support.Monday’s meeting is expected to finalise the govt‘s immediate and medium-term strategy to address the effects of drought and safeguard farmers and rural livelihoods.
