Punjab: AAP to seek cancellation of membership of 2 MLAs after they quit party | India News

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will approach the Punjab assembly Speaker seeking cancellation of the legislative membership of its MLAs Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra after both leaders resigned from the party, the party said on Monday.AAP said both legislators had already been suspended from the party over alleged anti-party activities. Following their suspension, the two MLAs resigned from the party’s primary membership. The development comes a day after Pathanmajra, who represents Sanaur, and Jouramajra, the MLA from Samana in Patiala district, announced their resignations from the AAP. Their exits came shortly after the party released its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Neither of their constituencies figured in the list. The two leaders had also criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led government over several issues, including the drug menace, rising state debt, alleged governance failures and unfulfilled promises.Speaking to the media in Chandigarh on Sunday, Jouramajra questioned the government’s handling of the drug problem and raised the cases of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, who was killed in Mansa, and Dalit man Gulzar Singh, who died by suicide in Sangrur. He also criticised the government over its failure to fulfil the promise of providing minimum support price for crops and alleged a shortage of teachers in government schools.Pathanmajra, meanwhile, accused AAP leaders from Delhi of controlling the Punjab government and claimed that state ministers lacked the authority to independently approve even a single file.
AAP leaders accuse BJP of inducting ‘rejected’ politicians
Reacting to the resignations, Punjab AAP president Aman Arora accused the BJP of attempting to induct leaders who had left or been expelled from other parties.AAP chief spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal also criticised the BJP, describing it as a ‘kabaad di dukaan’ (scrap shop) for collecting rejected political faces.Arora said the party had taken action against its own leaders whenever they allegedly acted against Punjab’s interests.

Meanwhile, speculation has emerged that both legislators could join the BJP. Pathanmajra had said they would join a party that worked in the interest of Punjab, while reports indicated that the two could formally join the BJP in Delhi.Jouramajra had served as a Cabinet minister in the Bhagwant Mann government from January 2023 to September 2024 before being dropped during a reshuffle. Pathanmajra has also faced a rape case registered following a complaint by a woman from Zirakpur. He was arrested in Gwalior in March 2026 after allegedly escaping police custody and was granted regular bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in May.
