Man’s 3-yr nest egg of ₹10 coins earns him a bike | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: For three years, every ₹10 coin that landed in pastor B Ravi Joseph’s pocket was set aside with a purpose. While most people spend loose change without a second thought, the 51-year-old held on to each coin, nurturing a dream he had carried for nearly a decade. This week, that quiet act of discipline paid off in the form of a brand-new Activa bike.A pastor in Luxettipet mandal of Mancherial district, Joseph turned an everyday habit into an extraordinary savings plan, accumulating ₹1.23 lakh entirely through ₹10 coins collected over three years.Joseph began saving the coins on Oct 10, 2023. Every time he received a ₹10 coin as change while buying groceries, vegetables or other daily necessities, he kept it aside rather than spending it. What began as a simple effort to save money gradually became a routine, with hundreds of coins piling up at his home.“I had wanted to buy a Bullet bike about 10 years ago, but I could not afford one because of financial constraints. On Oct 10, 2023, I decided to start collecting ₹10 coins. Initially, I thought I might buy something useful for the household with the money. As the savings grew, I decided to buy a two-wheeler for myself,” Joseph told TOI.His determination was tested from the start. “Many people, including my family members, tried to stop me from collecting the coins. There was a rumour then that ₹10 coins would be banned or would no longer be legal tender. My family asked me not to continue, but I did not give up. I kept saving the coins, one transaction at a time,” he said.Ignoring the doubts, Joseph continued putting aside whatever ₹10 coins came his way. He did not follow a fixed savings target or earmark large portions of his income. Instead, he relied entirely on small amounts left over from routine purchases, proving that consistency often matters more than the amount being saved.Over time, the collection grew into a substantial sum. When Joseph finally felt he had enough to fulfil his long-cherished wish, he carried the coins to a two-wheeler showroom. The staff spent nearly two hours counting the mountain of coins before confirming the total: ₹1.23 lakh.Originally from Huzurabad, Joseph has lived in Luxettipet for more than two decades. His son, an MBA graduate, works in Hyderabad, while his daughter, a graduate, lives with the family.
