In 2020, Steve McQueen’s son sold the actor’s former Malibu beach house for $7.2 million; two months later new owners paid $8.35 million, renovated the 4,335-square-foot retreat and listed it for $16.995 million

A former Malibu beach house belonging to Hollywood actor Steve McQueen returned to the luxury property market in 2022 after changing hands twice in 2020 and undergoing extensive renovations. According to the Coldwell Banker Realty listing, the 4,335-square-foot residence sits within the gated Victoria Point community in Malibu, California, and features oceanfront decks, expansive Pacific views and private beach access. The house was listed for $16.995 million after songwriter Ammar Malik and his wife, Chyna Bardarson, purchased it for $8.35 million, according to Architectural Digest.
From Steve McQueen’s private retreat to a property sale
Steve McQueen, known for films including Bullitt and The Great Escape, lived in the Malibu house with his then-wife, actor Ali MacGraw, during the 1970s. The property offered a quieter setting away from Hollywood, with access to the beach and views of the Pacific Ocean. McQueen, often nicknamed the “King of Cool”, was known for seeking privacy away from the entertainment industry. Marc Eliot’s 2012 biography describes how McQueen and MacGraw enjoyed walks along the beach near their home, where they could spend time away from public attention. The house later remained associated with McQueen’s legacy through its location and distinctive coastal setting. Its history also became a selling point when it returned to the real estate market decades after the actor’s death in 1980.
A $7.2 million sale in 2020
In July 2020, McQueen’s son, Chad McQueen, sold the Malibu property for $7.2 million, according to Architectural Digest. The sale marked a new chapter for the house, which had been connected to the actor’s private life for decades. Two months later, in September 2020, Malik and Bardarson bought the residence for $8.35 million. Malik, a songwriter known for co-writing popular tracks including Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger”, later renovated the property. The two transactions showed a $1.15 million difference between the reported sale prices.

Renovations and a $16.995 million asking price
After purchasing the property, Malik and Bardarson undertook extensive renovations. Malik told Inman that the couple spent well into seven figures renovating the property, including upgrading the plumbing and electrical systems. The renovated residence retained its emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. According to the Coldwell Banker Realty listing, the house has four bedrooms and five bathrooms, with large glass walls that open onto oceanfront decks. Its design connects the kitchen, dining and living areas with outdoor spaces overlooking the Pacific. The property also includes two primary suites, fireplaces, spa-style bathrooms, a three-car garage and a private staircase leading down to the beach. Its position within the gated Victoria Point community offers privacy, while its views extend along the coastline from Broad Beach towards Point Dume. In November 2022, the owners put the house on the market for $16.995 million. The asking price was more than double the $8.35 million they had paid in 2020, although a listing price does not establish the eventual selling price. The property was relisted for $14.995 million in June 2023 and sold for $13.6 million in September 2023, according to Coldwell Banker Realty’s property record.
A Malibu home with Hollywood history
The actor’s former home was presented to prospective buyers as a renovated beachside retreat rather than simply a celebrity-owned property. Its history with McQueen and MacGraw adds another dimension to the listing, recalling a period when the actor sought a quieter life outside Hollywood. The extensive renovations updated the house’s infrastructure and amenities, while its ocean-facing layout remained a central feature. The 2022 listing illustrates how a property’s value can be shaped by several factors, including location, improvements and historical associations. For McQueen’s former Malibu home, the combination of a private beach staircase, expansive decks, Pacific views and a connection to one of Hollywood’s best-known actors helped position it in the luxury real estate market.
