According to The Los Angeles Times, Cox purchased the Laurel Canyon property in 1988 for USD 795,000. Built in 1926, the 3,832-square-foot French Normandy-style home had previously been owned by burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee and Carole King. King was also photographed at the property for the cover of her iconic 1971 album ‘Tapestry’. The mansion featured five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, along with a swimming pool and an outdoor cabana. At the time, it marked one of Cox’s first major real-estate purchases.
Carole King warned Courteney Cox that the house was haunted
Cox later revealed that Carole King had warned her about the mansion’s alleged paranormal history. During her appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ in 2022, Cox recalled that King told her there had been an “ugly” divorce at the property and that a ghost was believed to be haunting the house. Cox initially did not take the warning seriously. However, she said some of her friends who stayed at the mansion claimed they had encountered a woman sitting on the edge of a bed. Despite remaining sceptical, Cox eventually agreed to participate in a séance with King in an attempt to clear the house of the alleged spirit.

Looking back at the experience, Cox admitted that she was more starstruck by King than focused on the séance itself. She recalled that King came over to the house and participated in the séance, but Cox was so much in awe of the legendary singer-songwriter that she “didn’t listen to a word.”At that stage, however, Cox still did not appear convinced that the house was genuinely haunted.
