Hyderabad has 69% of Telangana’s GST taxpayers, generates 91% collections

Hyderabad: Nearly 69% of Telangana’s registered GST taxpayers are based in Hyderabad, but the city accounted for 91.1% of the state’s GST collections in Aug. Hyderabad’s GST collections grew 20.53% year on year to ₹3,956 crore, while GST collections per registered taxpayer worked out to about ₹98,900, against ₹74,845 for Telangana as a whole.According to data accessed by TOI from the state commercial taxes department, Telangana has around 5.8 lakh registered GST taxpayers, of whom around 4 lakh are in Hyderabad. Thus, while the city accounts for about seven out of every 10 registered taxpayers, it contributed ₹3,956 crore of the ₹4,341 crore collected through GST in Aug.The per-taxpayer figure is calculated by dividing total GST collections by the number of registered taxpayers. It does not mean that every taxpayer actually paid this amount.Hyderabad’s high contribution reflects the concentration of high-value economic activity in the city. Its relatively high per-capita income and concentration of IT and IT-enabled services, pharmaceuticals, financial services, real estate, organised retail, manufacturing and other formal-sector businesses provide a large base of taxable economic activity. The city’s GST collections rose from ₹3,282 crore in Aug 2025 to ₹3,956 crore in Aug 2026, an increase of ₹674 crore, or 20.53%. The increase in Hyderabad alone accounted for 96.3% of the ₹700-crore rise in Telangana’s GST collections during Aug, underlining the city’s contribution to the growth in state tax revenue. The strong Aug performance was part of a broader trend. Hyderabad’s GST collections during April-Aug 2026 rose to ₹18,892 crore from ₹15,535 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering a growth of 21.60%, or an increase of ₹3,357 crore. With Hyderabad accounting for such a high concentration of businesses and taxpayers, efficient tax administration becomes important for ensuring smooth collections and taxpayer services. The commercial taxes department undertook a major reorganisation of its field administration on June 2, 2026. Under the new structure, the Core Urban Economy (CURE) was divided into 12 divisions and 78 circles, Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE) into one division and five circles, and Rural Agricultural Region Economy (RARE) into six divisions and 38 circles. The per taxpayer calculation also highlights Hyderabad’s economic concentration. Based on registered taxpayer numbers, Hyderabad’s August GST collection works out to about Rs 98,900 per taxpayer, compared with around Rs 74,845 for Telangana as a whole.A state-level Large Taxpayer Unit covering 400 top businesses was also created as part of the restructuring, providing a dedicated administrative mechanism for major taxpayers. The new structure is intended to make tax administration more accessible, strengthen monitoring and compliance and facilitate smoother revenue collection as business activity expands across Telangana.
