Death penalty sought for man who killed Indian-origin grocery store owner Suresh Patel in Tennessee; shot Bangladeshi immigrant Shahed Rana Mohsin at a gas station
The man who opened fire and killed Suresh Patel, an Indian-origin grocery shop owner, in Tennessee’s Jackson on August 20, faces the death penalty in another murder. Corey Houge was arraigned in Crockett County Circuit Court Wednesday, where district attorney Frederick Agee told Judge Clayburn Peeples that the state will be seeking the death penalty against Corey Houge for the shooting death of Shahed Rana Moshsin, 36.Mohsin was a Bangladeshi immigrant working at a gas station. On August 23, he was shot during a robbery attempt when he was observing Tahajjud prayer.Houge is charged with one count of First Degree Murder, one count of First Degree Murder in Perpetration of a Felony, one count of Especially Aggravated Robbery, four counts of Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

The Jackson Police Department said on August 20th, just before 9:00 p.m., a masked gunman, later identified as Houge, entered Ridgecrest Cellars at 2880 Ridgecrest Road and demanded money from the three employees working at the business. Even after there was no resistance as the employees turned the money over to the gunman, the accused opened fire and fled the business. Patel was declared dead.Jackdon Police Department said utilizing the recovered video and Flock, a Buick Lucerne was identified as a potential suspect vehicle, and Corey Houge was developed as a potential suspect. On Sunday, investigators with the Jackson Police Department, FBI, and ATF located Corey Houge driving his Buick Lucerne in the area of Lawrence Switch Road near Highway 70 in Jackson.The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but said Houge fled at a high rate of speed, crashed in front of a Burger King on Christmasville Road, and attempted to carjack a customer.In Madison County, Houge is facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of a felony, especially aggravated robbery, multiple counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony with a prior felony conviction, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
