Ramappa: After nearly seven decades, an expert team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) removed blockages in the Somasutra of the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple using advanced technology on Saturday.The Somasutra, located inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, is an ancient drainage channel designed to carry away the water and other fluids used during Abhishekam rituals performed on the presiding deity, Lord Ramalingeswara. Over time, the channel had become blocked, hindering the performance of Abhishekam in accordance with Agama Shastra traditions.The ASI’s Hyderabad circle undertook the restoration using non-destructive scientific conservation methods. The blocked channel was cleared through the careful, layer-by-layer removal of obstructions using a soft-drilling methodology, ensuring that no damage was caused to the temple’s original structure.For the restoration, the ASI employed advanced technologies, including 3D mapping of the internal blockages and inspection through endoscopic and GoPro cameras, with real-time monitoring throughout the process.The work was carried out under the direct supervision of the ASI Hyderabad circle in the presence of officials from the Endowments Department.With the restoration completed, the Somasutra is now fully functional, allowing devotees to perform Abhishekams in accordance with Agama rituals without any obstruction.
