Amid power demand surge, Genco synchronises 5th Yadadri unit | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Amid growing concerns over power demand and generation constraints, the Telangana Power Generation Corporation (TG Genco) on Wednesday synchronised the fifth and final 800 MW unit of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS), taking a significant step towards the full commissioning of the 4,000 MW project.YTPS comprises five units of 800 MW each. Until now, four units had been commissioned and were in commercial operation. With the synchronisation of the fifth unit, the entire plant is nearing full operational capacity.According to Genco officials, the project was developed in two phases, with stage I comprising two 800 MW units and stage II consisting of three 800 MW units. The corporation said the fifth unit was synchronised with the grid at 11:06 am. “The fifth unit was hand tripped for further commercial operations,” Genco said in a statement. The Yadadri project was developed jointly by Genco and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model. Conceived in 2015, the project received a loan commitment of Rs 16,000 crore from the Rural Electrification Corporation. While the original project cost was estimated at around ₹25,000 crore, it later escalated to nearly ₹36,000 crore.Despite the progress, the plant continues to face challenges in securing the quality of coal required for optimal operations. YTPS is designed to run on superior grade-9 coal, while coal produced within Telangana is largely of grade-12 and grade-13 quality. To address the issue, the state govt has been pursuing coal linkages from Mahanadi, South Eastern and Naini coalfields to ensure a steady supply of higher grade fuel for the thermal station.
