While George Clooney has faced much success in his career, there have been times when his hard work did not always pay off. The beloved actor recently attended the Venice Film Festival, where he received the Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement. During one segment of the festival, the actor looked back on one of his most famous works, ‘The Thin Red Line,’ a war film released in 1998.
George Clooney revisits his days filming for ‘The Thin Red Line’
On September 3, Clooney attended a moderated conversation at the Venice Film Festival, where he was asked what he enjoys about directing rather than just acting. PEOPLE reported that, while answering the question, the actor said he has much more control over a film as a director than he did as an actor.While answering the question, he recalled his time filming for ‘The Thin Red Line.’ He shared that while filming the movie, he did many scenes; however, most never made it to the final theatrical cut. He shared, “I remember I did Thin Red Line, which is this really interesting film, and Terry Malick was coming back; he hadn’t worked in 15 years and wanted to come back and do a film, so I thought, ‘I’m going to help him get this film made, and I’m going to do this part for him.’”Further on, he explained that he had shot for the film in Australia for months, adding, “He cut me completely out except for the last scene in the film. The very last scene. I watched it, and I was like, ‘He cut me completely out. Am I only in the last scene? My God, I look like an a**hole!’ And he said, ‘No, George, it’s pretty fun,’ and I said, ‘Oh, s***’ So you can really change people’s performances. The director is in charge; the director is the painter.”
About ‘The Thin Red Line’
The war film is set during the Second World War and focuses on a troupe of US soldiers who fight on a Pacific island, specifically the Battle of Guadalcanal. Along with Clooney, the film starred many other big names, including Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, Jim Caviezel, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Jared Leto, Tim Blake Nelson, Nick Nolte, John C. Reilly, and John Travolta. ‘The Thin Red Line’ was based on James Jones’s 1962 autobiographical novel about the World War II battle for Guadalcanal. The film was released in 1998 and was directed by Terrence Malick. The film marked his return to the filmmaking industry after an almost 20-year hiatus.
