Vipul Amrutlal Shah‘s sci-fi action thriller ‘Samuk’, led by Akshay Kumar, is currently being shot on location in the UK. Reports indicate that acclaimed Bengali actress Rukmini Maitra is in contention to play the female lead. If the casting is confirmed, it would be a milestone in two ways, marking Maitra’s first Hindi film after a flourishing career in Bengali cinema, and standing out as a rare instance of a Bengali actress landing a lead role in a major Hindi production.

According to Variety India, discussions are underway with Maitra for a key part in the Kanishk Varma directorial. Rukmini has an interesting role that will complement Kumar. The makers wanted someone with intensity and a screen presence.

‘Samuk’ brings together science fiction, action, and survival elements in its storytelling. The project also reunites Akshay Kumar with producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, 12 years after they last worked together on 2014’s ‘Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty’. Their body of work together also includes ‘Aankhen’ (2002), ‘Waqt: The Race Against Time’ (2005), ‘Namastey London’ (2007), and ‘Action Replayy’ (2010).
‘Samuk’ slated for 2027 theatrical release
Directed by Kanishk Varma, it has been over two years in the making and is being crafted as a large-scale spectacle for theatrical release. The film is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2027.
