NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around Rs 4,900 crore.He also took a ride on the newly inaugurated stretch with Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay.PM Modi and Vijay jointly flagged off the new Metro services in the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The Prime Minister also purchased a ticket and briefly interacted with an employee at the ticket counter.The newly inaugurated stretch is part of Corridor 4 of Phase II and covers around 15 km, with 11 elevated Metro stations. The corridor features a unique 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations.The new stretch is expected to reduce daily commuting time and improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.Chennai Metro services: Timings and stationsAccording to Chennai Metro Rail, regular passenger services on the new stretch will begin at 4 pm on Sunday and operate in both directions until 9 pm. From October 12, services will run daily from 7 am to 9 pm.The last train will depart at 9 pm from both terminals: Poonamallee Bypass Metro and Vadapalani Metro on Corridor 4.The 11 stations on the new stretch are Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani.PM Modi offers prayersEarlier, Modi offered prayers at the Sri Jalakanteswara Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu. He later visited the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras.The Prime Minister is also scheduled to dedicate the centre to the nation. The facility is part of a scientific initiative to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering different stages of life, from the foetal stage to old age.PM Modi will also release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas featuring more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain. The atlas is expected to help researchers identify potential new targets for treatment.Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.Highway, port and railway projects on agendaDuring his visit, Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for National Highway projects worth around Rs 3,700 crore in Tamil Nadu.The key projects include the 36-km, four-laned Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744A, the 30-km, four-laned Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A, and the four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83.
