Hyderabad: Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday announced a slew of education, housing and infrastructure projects worth ₹23 crore for his native village, Thatipamula, while also defending the state govt’s handling of the El Niño-induced rainfall deficit and accusing the BRS of politicising farmers’ distress.During a visit to Thatipamula in Thungathurthy assembly constituency, Uttam said a new primary school building would be constructed at a cost of ₹2 crore with Telangana Genco funding. Stating that his family had earlier donated land and a building for the village school, he directed officials to ensure completion of the new facility before the next academic year.He also announced a ₹5 crore zilla parishad high school building with CSR support, saying the goal was to provide village students educational facilities on a par with those in Hyderabad.Among the major projects announced was a ₹16 crore check dam-cum-bridge. The minister also said 80 Indiramma houses had been sanctioned for the village, while local representatives sought additional housing, hostel facilities and a fire station for the wider Thungathurthy region.Earlier in the day, Uttam inaugurated development works costing ₹26.93 crore in Nereducherla mandal of Huzurnagar constituency.Addressing a public meeting, Uttam accused the BRS of spreading “malicious propaganda” over the El Niño phenomenon and attempting to derive political mileage from farmers’ hardships. He said El Niño was a global weather phenomenon affecting rainfall and not something “coined in the Congress office”.“Seeking votes amid farmers’ tears is the lowest form of politics,” he said, adding that the govt would take all possible measures to protect kharif crops and prevent drinking water shortages through prudent water management.
