'Thenisai Thendral' Deva’s final moments before demise: Doctor reveals details of cardiac arrest and last treatment to the veteran composer

Doctors who treated veteran Tamil music composer Deva have shared details about his final hours. The composer, fondly known as ‘Thenisai Thendral,’ reportedly suffered a massive cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite prolonged medical efforts. Doctors explained that his existing heart condition and the circumstances surrounding his arrival at the hospital reduced his chances of recovery. The medical team said they provided emergency treatment in line with established guidelines before informing his family that further efforts had not restored his pulse.

Doctors tried to revive Deva for up to 90 minutes

Speaking to Sun News, Dr Sivadarshini, Head of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at a private Hospital in Nungambakkam, Chennai, described the efforts made to save Deva. She said, “When we came here, there was no pulse. For those who don’t have a pulse, we call it advanced cardiac life support.” She added, “So, giving chest compressions, giving shock. As per guidelines, we gave maximum treatment. We tried for almost one to one-and-a-half hours.” Despite these efforts, the doctors could not revive him. She said, “But again, we couldn’t revive the pulse. There was no pulse.”

Previous heart condition and massive cardiac arrest affected recovery chances

The doctor said Deva had an existing heart problem and had suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Explaining the factors that affected his recovery, she said, “Plus, the transportation time from earlier, all these have reduced the chances of recovery.” She also highlighted the importance of immediate treatment when the heart stops pumping. According to the doctor, Deva’s age and previous heart condition further lowered his chances of survival. However, she cautioned against blaming the outcome only on the time taken to reach the hospital. She explained that the severity of the disease was also a major factor, even though emergency treatment had reportedly begun at home.

Doctors extend condolences as fans remember Deva’s musical legacy

Despite the emergency treatment, the medical team could not revive the veteran composer. The doctors expressed their condolences to his family and said they had followed the required procedures and made every possible effort. Deva was widely known for bringing Chennai’s gaana music into mainstream Tamil cinema and composing memorable songs for films such as ‘Baashha,’ ‘Annamalai,’ and ‘Aasai.’ His music also included the iconic theme associated with Rajinikanth’s screen presence. With news of his death spreading, his fans are now remembering him not just for his hit songs but also for the unique style he gave to Tamil film music.
