Revanth says Surekha issue with party panel, final call with AICC

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday maintained that the issue involving endowments minister Konda Surekha is under examination by the Telangana Congress disciplinary action committee and said any final decision would be taken by the party high command.Speaking to reporters at the secretariat, Revanth declined to comment on the merits of the controversy, describing it as an internal party matter. He, however, made it clear that all leaders would be bound by the decision taken by the AICC leadership. The chief minister said he would not like to comment on internal party affairs or react to speculation surrounding the issue.Later in the day, Revanth held a meeting with available ministers, MPs, MLCs and MLAs and reportedly instructed party leaders not to speak to the media or make public comments on the Surekha issue. The controversy comes days after Surekha stated that she would meet the chief minister following his return from the UK tour. That meeting is yet to take place. The issue gained traction after K Sushmitha, daughter of Surekha, reportedly made remarks against the chief minister and claimed that she would contest from Parkal, a statement that several Congress leaders viewed as being contrary to party discipline.More than 20 Congress MPs, MLCs and MLAs have reportedly sought strict action against Surekha, arguing that she failed to condemn her daughter’s remarks.Sources said the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee’s disciplinary committee, comprising leaders including Mallu Ravi and A Shyam Mohan, has prepared a report on the matter. The report is expected to be submitted to the TPCC president, who will subsequently forward it to AICC in charge Meenakshi Natarajan.A senior leader said: “Surekha hails from the BC community. She has already met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. As a result, no decision can be taken by the state leadership in Surekha’s case without consulting the party leadership in Delhi. A majority of the party leaders are of the opinion that she should have instantly condemned the comments made by her daughter but she did not do it. It remains to be seen whether the AICC will take a decision or ask the state leadership to deal with it.”
