‘Regime change’ remark row: BJP chief Nitin Nabin says opposition’s ‘true agenda’ exposed

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday stepped up its attack over the alleged plot to topple Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, with party president Nitin Nabin saying the opposition’s use of terms such as “regime change” exposed its agenda of “destabilising the country in collusion with foreign powers.“He described the alleged plot as part of the “Urban Naxals’” agenda.“The use of terms like ‘regime change’ has clearly exposed the opposition’s true agenda before the nation. This nefarious attempt to destabilise India in collusion with foreign powers is part of the agenda of ‘Urban Naxals’,” Nabin wrote in a post in Hindi on X.The BJP chief accused the opposition of seeking to seize power “at any cost”.“The opposition’s fight is not for electoral reforms, the SIR, or the future of the country’s youth, but rather to spread anarchy in the country and seize power at any cost,” he said.Emphasising that the path to power in a democracy runs through the people’s mandate, Nabin further stated that India’s patriotic citizens and the BJP would not allow attempts to undermine India’s democratic system to succeed.“In a democracy, the path to power passes through the mandate of the people, not through chaos. India’s patriotic public and the Bharatiya Janata Party will never allow any attempt to weaken the country’s democratic system to succeed,” he added.Nabin’s remarks came a day after activist Prashant Bhushan, addressing a press conference in Delhi alongside student leaders and activists, said that expressing “disaffection” against a government was not a crime in a democracy and that the struggle was now “really for a regime change.”

We are currently fighting to ensure that elections are conducted properly. But if this kind of brutality continues, there will certainly be a regime change,” Bhushan told reporters.AISA president Neha Bora, another prominent face of the ongoing anti-SIR protests in Delhi, also "thanked" Bangladesh for "showing us the way.""The Gen Z movement we are seeing everywhere in this country first started in Bangladesh and congratulations to you for showing us the way and extending solidarity to the young people of this country," Bora is heard saying in the 39-second video clip shared by BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari. The remarks came against the backdrop of student-led movements in neighbouring Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka that led to the ouster of incumbent governments.
