Owaisi alleges jail ‘setting’, ‘bail for Rs 2 cr’; prisons dept denies

Hyderabad: Asaduddin Owaisi, Hyderabad’s member of Parliament, sparked a controversy on Saturday after he accused the Chanchalguda prison superintendent of facilitating illegal activities inside the jail.Speaking at a public meeting in Old City’s Golconda area, Owaisi alleged that a person could secure bail by paying a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore to some jail officials. After a clip of his speech went viral across social media platforms on Sunday, senior prison officials refuted the allegations as baseless. In his speech, Owaisi claimed there was “a complete package” in the jail. “Jail se leke investigating officer tak, jo bolte hain setting kar dena. Allah acha rakhe hamare Chanchalguda ke jail ke superintendent ko. Allah unko ACB se bachale (from the jail authorities to the investigating officer, they say everything can be fixed. May Allah keep the superintendent of our Chanchalguda Jail well; may Allah protect him from the ACB),” alleged Owaisi. He further claimed that the Chanchalguda jail superintendent had permitted a meeting between alleged murder accused inside the prison, where a plot was allegedly hatched to attack AIMIM leaders.“I want to tell those people that AIMIM will not get scared by their actions. It will always support the poor and victims’ families and oppose the murderers,” he said, adding that murder is forbidden in Islam. “We will not give our sons or daughters in marriage to families where any member is a murderer,” he appealed to the Muslims.Reacting to the MP’s statement, D Srinivas, Telangana Prisons deputy inspector general (Hyderabad Range), said the “allegations made against the superintendent are completely baseless, false and without any factual foundation”. “The prison department strongly refutes any allegation of corruption, collusion or extending undue favour to any prisoner,” he said, adding, “The grant of bail is a matter decided by a competent court. Jail authorities have no role in granting or deciding bail to any accused or prisoner. Unauthorised gatherings or meetings are not permitted inside prison premises.”
