Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognising his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema.Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to congratulate the actor, writing, “Congratulations to the legendary Anant Nag Ji on being conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. For several decades, his effortless performances, remarkable versatility and brilliance have left a very strong mark on Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema. In whichever role he has played, he brought rare depth and authenticity. This is indeed a richly deserved honour for a truly distinguished artist.”

Born Anant Nagarkatte on September 4, 1948, the actor has built a formidable career in Kannada cinema, appearing in over 300 films — more than 250 of them in Kannada. His body of work extends across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam and English cinema. Outside films, he is widely remembered for the Doordarshan series Malgudi Days, adapted from R.K. Narayan’s stories. He has won five Karnataka State Film Awards over his career and received the Padma Bhushan in 2025.
