Rajinikanth explains why he rejected ‘Baasha 2’ and ‘Petta 2’
Rajinikanth said he was concerned that sequels could simply repeat the formula of their predecessors. He believes a follow-up should offer more than familiar elements from the first film.“I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film. I was approached for ‘Baasha 2’, and Karthik Subbaraj also came to me with a proposal for ‘Petta 2’, which would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character. But I wasn’t interested in either sequel.”
Why ‘Jailer’ convinced Rajinikanth to return
The actor said revisiting ‘Jailer’ after its OTT release helped him recognise the potential for another instalment. He pointed to the ending, which introduced the idea of a larger network connected to Varma’s character.“After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the movie again. Towards the end, when I was about to end Varma’s character, he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him either. So, the story was perfect for a sequel.”
Nelson Dilipkumar returns with ‘Jailer 2’
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, ‘Jailer 2’ features Rajinikanth in the lead role. The actor also revealed that the filmmaker had initially planned to work on a Telugu project before postponing it to focus on the sequel.
