Hyderabad: Days after a fire in the sick newborn care unit (SNCU) raised serious concerns over infrastructure and safety standards at RIMS, Adilabad, the state govt has sanctioned ₹11.10 crore for urgent repairs, renovation and restoration works across the facility. Five newborns have died in the recent fire at the SNCU.The funds were released following directions from health minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, who ordered immediate measures to strengthen infrastructure and address critical deficiencies at the hospital. Before the sanction, the district administration and officials from multiple departments conducted a detailed inspection of the RIMS campus and identified priority works requiring urgent attention.Of the total allocation, ₹1 crore has been earmarked for renovation of the SNCU, where the recent fire occurred and where critically ill newborns receive specialised treatment. Another ₹1 crore has been sanctioned for painting and refurbishment of hospital buildings.The govt has also allocated ₹1.60 crore for repairs to damaged cement concrete roads and sections of the compound wall within the hospital premises.A major portion of the package, ₹5 crore, has been set aside for renovation and maintenance of toilets and bathrooms across the hospital, reflecting the scale of infrastructure upgrades planned at the facility.The ₹11.10 crore package covers a range of civil, electrical and medical infrastructure works identified as essential for improving the functioning and safety of the hospital.The sanction comes amid heightened scrutiny of safety measures at RIMS following the recent SNCU fire. In the aftermath of the incident, district authorities conducted inspections of the hospital and reviewed the condition of critical safety systems and emergency infrastructure.
