CMC orders crackdown on illegal buildings built on 75 sq yards, demolishes nine structures | Hyderabad News

Two people died and several others were injured when an unauthorized seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar, Madhapur, Hyderabad on Saturday.

Hyderabad: In the wake of the collapse of a seven-storey under-construction building in Gachibowli’s Anjayya Nagar, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has intensified its enforcement drive against unauthorised under-construction buildings, identifying 38 structures for action on Monday.Following directions from CMC commissioner G Srijana, town planning and enforcement teams conducted field inspections and acted against buildings falling under specified categories. Of the 38 structures identified, 28 were served unauthorised construction notices, one building was seized and nine buildings were demolished, according to the CMC.The enforcement drive is primarily targeting two categories of constructions. On plots below 75 sq. yards, buildings under construction that exceed 7 metres in height are being taken up for action. On plots above 75 sq. yards, any building constructed without valid building permission is being targeted, irrespective of its height.Officials said the structures are being identified through both citizen complaints and suo motu field inspections by enforcement teams. The commissioner has directed officials to ensure that no unauthorised construction falling under the identified categories is left unchecked. Ranganath said several structures had been built in violation of regulations, including constructions on small plots where only limited floors had been permitted.He said some buildings had been constructed on plots as small as 50 sq. yards, with permissions reportedly obtained only for two floors. However, additional floors were subsequently added, with seven-to eight-storey structures coming up on the same plots. In some cases, construction had also encroached upon stormwater channels, further compromising the safety of the structures.According to the commissioner, the foundations and pillars of some buildings were designed only for the originally permitted construction, while additional floors were later added, raising serious concerns over their structural capacity.
