Centre to unveil AI regulation roadmap within a month; industry to shoulder safety responsibility | India News

New Delhi: The Centre will release a consultation paper within a month to lay the groundwork for India’s next set of artificial intelligence (AI) regulations, focusing on safety, human welfare, skilling, inclusivity and protection against emerging risks such as deepfakes and psychological harm.Announcing this at the launch of the World Bank’s World Development Report 2026 on Thursday, electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government would adopt a techno-legal approach rather than rely solely on legislation, with industry expected to shoulder the primary responsibility for ensuring safety.“Bulk of this regulation will have to be taken by the industries. Bulk of the responsibility will have to be taken by the industry,” he said, flagging cybersecurity, deepfakes and psychological harm as major concerns.The minister also announced the next phase of India’s AI computing infrastructure expansion, with the government initiating long-term procurement of 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), including an initial tender for 5,000. The proposed procurement arrangement would provide demand visibility for five years.

In another development, Vaishnaw said India now has a visible three-to-four-year roadmap for developing indigenous GPUs capable of running AI models, particularly for inference. Further details would be announced in the coming months.The government will also empanel AI models and solutions for official use, allowing selected companies and startups to subsequently compete for departmental contracts.Emphasising wider access to AI, Vaishnaw said its benefits must extend beyond large technology companies to farmers, students, researchers and small businesses.
