New Delhi: PM Modi keeps a rather busy schedule at global events and it was no different as New Delhi hosted the Brics summit, with his schedule chock-a-block as he held 15 sit-down bilateral and numerous pull-aside meetings over three days since Friday.And, it was not only about numbers, but also India’s success in having the grouping of 11 countries, some of whom like Iran and the UAE having deeply adversarial positions on the West Asia conflict, to sign on to a joint declaration affirmed.

Modi’s key bilateral meetings included those with presidents Xi Jinping (China), Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Masoud Pezeshkian (Iran).PM had the hard task of reconciling the conflicting takes of different countries – some like Russia and Iran are avowedly anti-West and some others, including India, do not want Brics to be pitted as a counteract against the West, and the wordings of joint declaration served the Indian interest well.If the participation from the likes of Xi Jinping, Putin and, not the least, Pezeshkian ensured that the summit had the heft and standing to draw the global attention to its goings-on, its successful conclusion reiterated the resonance of Indian policy of multi-alignment under Modi.Officials said that the fact that both Pezeshkian and UAE crown prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan shared a level of trust and comfort with Modi was telling.As the summit ended, the PM posted on social media, “Thank you to all Brics leaders for making the Delhi Summit very productive and outcome oriented!”
