Russia Ukraine War: Overnight Russian missile strikes leave 6 dead, 33 wounded across Kyiv
At least six people were killed and 33 wounded in Kyiv after Russia launched an overnight missile barrage that damaged residential buildings and public facilities as explosions continued across the capital into Thursday morning.In the Solomianskyi district, the upper two floors of a nine-storey residential building were destroyed, while fires broke out on other floors. People were also trapped inside two residential buildings and a school shelter.The attack struck 12 locations across the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, including a medical facility and an educational institution. Emergency workers rescued people from beneath the debris as the air raid alert continued into the early morning, according to the Associated Press (AP).Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the overnight assault combined ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones, killing 12 people in Kyiv and one more in the surrounding region, while leaving around 40 others injured. He said Ukraine still lacked sufficient anti-ballistic defences and warned that Patriot interceptors remained urgently needed.Russia has stepped up ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in an effort to strain Ukraine’s air-defence stocks. The capital has only a limited number of systems capable of countering such threats.Interceptor missiles for Ukraine’s US-made Patriot systems are also in persistently short supply, adding to the pressure on Kyiv’s ability to defend against ballistic attacks.US President Donald Trump had previously authorised Ukraine to obtain licences to produce Patriot air-defence systems before reversing the decision.Ukraine has also expanded its long-range strikes deep inside Russia, hitting arms depots, military installations and other strategic targets as part of an effort to erode Moscow’s capacity to continue attacks on Ukrainian cities.
