Kavitha Advocates Godavari-Krishna River Linking as Permanent Solution to Nalgonda’s Water Woes

Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Saturday alleged that successive govts had failed to complete key irrigation projects and asserted that interlinking the Godavari and Krishna rivers is the only long-term solution to Nalgonda district’s water scarcity and fluoride problems.Addressing a presentation at the Dindi Reservoir in Nalgonda district, Kavitha criticised the state govt’s proposal to bring water to Dindi from Yedula, claiming the plan was technically difficult and impractical. She said that even the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme was struggling to secure adequate water from the Krishna basin and questioned how additional water could be diverted to Dindi.Kavitha alleged that design changes made to the Yellur pump house, including its conversion from an open-cut structure to an underground facility, had adversely affected the Palamuru-Rangareddy project. She contended that the available water levels and infrastructure limitations made the proposed diversion to Dindi unviable. The TRS leader maintained that the state should instead utilise Godavari waters through the partially completed Baswapur Reservoir under the Kaleshwaram project. Completion of Baswapur and related infrastructure would enable water supply to Dindi and surrounding regions more efficiently. She also called for the interlinking of the Godavari and Krishna rivers, stating that the idea had been advocated earlier by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. Such a linkage, she said, would not only address irrigation needs but also help eliminate fluoride-related drinking water problems in Nalgonda by ensuring widespread availability of river water.Kavitha accused the Congress govt of creating disputes between Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts instead of providing practical solutions to water issues. She claimed that the state govt had failed to complete several projects that were already substantially finished and was announcing new initiatives without adequate surveys or planning. In a significant remark, Kavitha admitted that mistakes had been made during the previous BRS regime in the irrigation sector and said she was willing to take responsibility for being part of that govt. However, she maintained that the present govt had also failed to advance key projects over the past three years.Kavitha demanded compensation of ₹25,000 per acre for farmers affected by drought-like conditions and criticized the govt over water supply, fertiliser availability and rising input costs.ends/
