‘No freezer malfunction at Jadcherla hospital, bodies arrived decomposed’

Hyderabad: The health department on Monday refuted social media claims that bodies had decomposed due to malfunctioning freezers at the Jadcherla area hospital mortuary in Mahabubnagar district, clarifying that the bodies were already decomposed when they were brought to the facility.Hospital superintendent Dr Mohammed Arshadullah said two bodies were brought to the mortuary on Oct 23. One was that of Metta Lachamma (49) who had died four or five days earlier, while the other was that of Sriramulu, who died by drowning. Both bodies were stored in the mortuary freezers. He said the freezers were functioning properly and were equipped with miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) to protect against short circuits and other electrical faults. Even during power disruptions caused by voltage fluctuations, the freezers could maintain the required temperature for about four to six hours, he added.Earlier, former health minister and BRS leader C Laxma Reddy had criticised the state govt over the alleged decomposition of bodies at the mortuary, blaming power disruptions and administrative negligence. He demanded an uninterrupted power supply, immediate corrective measures and improvements to hospital infrastructure.
