Genco focuses on coal handling plant issues at YTPS

Hyderabad: Telangana govt has initiated work to rectify issues in the Coal Handling Plant (CHP) at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) after streamlining coal linkages, with the aim of ensuring maximum power generation even when wet and slushy coal is supplied. The issues were identified by TG Genco officials during the operation of the station’s four commissioned power generation units.“To mitigate seasonal challenges associated with wet coal and unlock the CHP’s rated capacity of 2,500 tonnes per hour (TPH), intensive rectification works are underway with the support of Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL). BHEL has assured us that major upgrades to the CHP infrastructure will be completed by the end of Oct 2026,” Telangana Genco chairperson and managing director S Harish said.TG Genco synchronised the fifth unit (800 MW) of YTPS with the grid on Oct 6, achieving a peak load of 158.7 MW during its initial coal-firing trial. The utility is likely to declare the fifth unit’s Commercial Operation Date (COD) in Nov 2026. With four supercritical units already commissioned, the addition of the final unit will enable YTPS to achieve its full operational capacity of 4,000 MW.Officials said the plant’s core infrastructure, including the boiler, turbine, water systems and ash-handling systems, is operating satisfactorily. The four commissioned units are actively supplying power to the state grid, contributing between 1,800 MW and 2,300 MW to meet growing demand. To sustain peak generation across all units, TG Genco, in addition to long-term linkages with The Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL), is sourcing coal from the Naini Coal Block and Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL). Better-grade coal from the Naini block is currently arriving at YTPS at a steady rate of four to five rakes a day, and logistical arrangements are underway to transport coal procured from MCL under Window-II of the SHAKTI Policy-2025, the utility said.As the state navigates the climatic impacts of El Nino alongside surging domestic and industrial power demand, officials said TG Genco remains committed to its primary mandate of delivering reliable base-load generation of at least 140 million units (MU) per day from its thermal power plants.
