IIT-Hyderabad accounted for 15 of 150+ unhonoured offers; two firms barred for two years

Hyderabad: Fifteen of the more than 150 job offers that went unhonoured across the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year were from IIT-Hyderabad, prompting the All IITs Placement Committee to adopt a two-year non-cooperation policy against 22 companies. Officials here said the institute has barred two firms from its campus placements — Oracle and Rapidue Technologies — for the next two years.Five of the 15 offers at IIT-H came from Oracle, while the remaining 10 were from Rapidue Technologies.Nationally, of the 150-plus offers made to the 2026 graduating batch that went unhonoured across 23 IITs, 40 were reportedly from Oracle. The impact was compounded for students at IIT-H by the timing of the withdrawals. Under the institute’s one-company policy, once a student accepts an offer, they are taken out of the placement process and cannot apply to other campus recruiters.“Oracle selected the students in Dec. So, they were taken out of the placement process soon afterwards. It was only in May this year that the institute learnt that the offers would not be honoured. While the affected students were brought back into the placement process after that, the hiring season was in its last leg and companies offering big packages had already finished recruitment,” said Mohsin Siddiqui, a placement official at IIT-H. He added: “Though some of the candidates have still managed to get better offers than those previously offered — both by Oracle and Rapidue — some are still looking for an opportunity.”While the affected 2026 graduates are grateful for the support from IIT-H, they said the stress had been tremendous.“We were supposed to join Rapidue Technologies in June. When they pulled the plug on the offer, we had to start all over again — and at a time when the rest of the placement process had moved on considerably,” said a candidate from the chemical engineering dept at IIT-H who recently got placed with a startup. “We hadn’t imagined something like this could happen. It took several months before the institute helped us get back into the placement process,” he added.Another student whose Oracle offer was revoked said the uncertainty was worsened by repeated assurances that the offer would come through. “By April or May, we normally have our offers and joining dates. But we had no clarity, and by May-June the placement season was almost over. Suddenly, we had to start looking for jobs again, with many of the available offers carrying lower CTCs,” said a student of bachelor of engineering science with specialisation in artificial intelligence. H added: “We kept calling the HR, but they would not respond. Even after several queries, we were assured that our offers would not be revoked. Then, in the end, they backed out,” he shared. He has since joined Skan AI, an AI startup.A third student, also affected by Oracle’s withdrawal of an offer, eventually joined the company after it reinstated some offers, but said the experience left him more cautious.“When Oracle called me back, I was more cautious than I had been the first time. Even after the interviews and offer, I wasn’t sure it would actually happen until the joining date. I had already got placed elsewhere, but Oracle was offering a better CTC, so I chose it,” he said.Placement rate still high: IIT-HMayur Vaidya, faculty-in- charge, office of career services at IIT-H, however, said that the institute continued to record strong placement outcomes despite changing market conditions and global economic challenges. “For 2026, we recorded an 86.9% placement rate for BTech students and 70% for MTech students, including on-campus, off-campus and higher-studies outcomes. The average package was Rs 23.5 lakh and the median package was Rs 20 lakh. Recruiters from diverse sectors, including software, AI, semiconductor, electronics, core engineering, consulting, finance, manufacturing, healthcare and R&D, participated in the placement drive,” he added.
