Hyderabad: A 60-year-old farmer from Nizamabad lost ₹13.3 lakh to cyber fraudsters who allegedly duped him with promises of a lottery jackpot. Based on the victim’s complaint, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) registered a cheating case.In his complaint, the victim, a resident of Makloor in Nizamabad, told police that he came across an advertisement for the Bumper Dhamaka Kerala State Govt Lottery while browsing reels on social media in the last week of July.“I clicked on the advertisement and landed on a post promoting the lottery. Subsequently, I received multiple calls and WhatsApp messages from unknown persons urging me to buy lottery tickets. I purchased five tickets online for ₹200 through a UPI link shared by the fraudsters,” the victim said.Shortly afterwards, he was informed that one of the tickets had won a fourth prize of ₹8 lakh. To process the prize amount, a fraudster identifying himself as Vishal Mukhi asked the victim to share his bank account details.The accused allegedly sent a series of forged documents, including a fake no-objection certificate purportedly issued by the Kerala Lottery Department, a bogus RBI letter, a counterfeit winner’s certificate and a fabricated Income Tax notice, to convince the victim that he had won the lottery.“After sending the documents, they demanded payments towards registration fees, security deposits, taxes and other charges. Between July 30 and Aug 20, I transferred more than ₹13.3 lakh, some of which they claimed was refundable. However, I did not receive a single rupee in return,” the victim told police.After lodging a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on Aug 22, the victim approached TGCSB officials. A case was subsequently registered on Sept 2.
