Hyderabad: For the toppers at Osmania University’s 85th convocation on Tuesday, the medals they received marked not just academic achievement but also the beginning of new ambitions.For Dr Makla D, who received the Telangana governor’s Gold Medal for the best PhD thesis in English by a Scheduled Tribe student, the recognition was particularly meaningful. Coming from an agricultural family, the associate professor of English said he now wants to use his experience to help tribal students overcome the challenges they face, particularly those studying in govt degree colleges.“I feel deeply honoured and excited to receive the award. The 85th convocation will remain a lifetime memory for me,” he told TOI, attributing his achievement to his mother, wife, children and the English department at OU.Makla said tribal students often face challenges such as limited access to English education and financial constraints. As an English professor, he wants to contribute to improving their academic opportunities and helping them move ahead.For MA Economics graduate Akhila A, the convocation brought double recognition. She received the Gottam Sugunamma Memorial Gold Medal and the Smt Vollari Radhamma Memorial Gold Medal.Akhila, who hails from Siddipet district and completed her postgraduate studies at Nizam College, now plans to focus on civil services preparation. She has cleared the Telangana Group-I preliminary examination and appeared for the mains.“Economics has always interested me, and I now want to prepare seriously for the UPSC Civil Services examination,” she said.She credited her parents and uncle for supporting her education. Her uncle’s hard work and consistency inspired her, while former President APJ Abdul Kalam remains her role model.
